The best Greek tavernas in Melbourne right now

A Greek taverna is the room, not the single plate: dips and warm pita to start, saganaki flamed at the table, grilled octopus and calamari, a slow-cooked lamb shoulder and a charcoal meat platter to share, a galaktoboureko and an ouzo to finish, the family table you book for an occasion. It is its own thing, the whole long lunch, distinct from the souvlaki wrap and the gyros plate the city has its own lists for. Melbourne, one of the great Greek cities outside Greece, runs them from Yarraville and Camberwell out to Malvern East, Moonee Ponds, Collingwood, Niddrie and Oakleigh. We ranked the inner-city tavernas that diners name for that table by their Curateria Score and what reviewers keep saying on their most recent visits, with chains and far suburbs left out. Here is the order this month.

Top of the list is Eleni's Kitchen + Bar in Yarraville, the high-volume room reviewers call a fantastic Greek restaurant for a varied, authentic table of slow-cooked lamb shoulder, grilled calamari and an ouzo seafood saganaki, the galaktoboureko the close and the kitchen generous with dietaries. Gracie Greco in Camberwell follows, the high-scoring room reviewers praise for great Greek food with a modern twist and generous portions, a lamb gyros, a saganaki with olive jam, grilled octopus and loukoumades the order.

Theio Theo in Malvern East is the room reviewers say serves Greek food better than they ate in Greece, a galaktoboureko, grilled prawns and a charcoal meat platter the picks across a tasting menu. Philhellene in Moonee Ponds is the lovely room reviewers fill for grilled octopus, calamari, a slow-cooked lamb shoulder, dolmades and a pastitsio, the homemade three dips a must to start. Mediterranean Greek Tavern in Elsternwick is the family room reviewers return to feeling welcome, a saganaki, calamari, a lamb souvlaki, a meat platter and a whole grilled fish on the table.

SOWL Restaurant in Carnegie is the modern room reviewers rate for a sixteen-hour Lamb of Gods shoulder, beef cheeks with polenta and a tuna crudo, the service and the vibe the draw, and Hellenic Depot in Hughesdale is the charcoal house whose whole-cut lamb gyros, mixed meat and seafood platters and fried whitebait reviewers call some of the best traditional lamb in Melbourne. Jim's Greek Tavern in Collingwood is the institution reviewers call the best Greek taverna by far, as close to Greece as you get, the char-grilled octopus, the calamari and the meat platter always fresh.

The list closes across the inner ring. Nobel Greek Tavern in Niddrie is the room reviewers rave about for a souvlaki lamb platter, grilled chicken, calamari and dips with pita, the service the reason they write before they leave the table. Greca Street in Oakleigh is the room reviewers call amazing every single time, a grilled calamari, a cheese saganaki, grilled octopus and a mixed gyros plate the spread for a family occasion, GRK Greek Kitchen and Bar in Thornbury is the kitchen and bar reviewers rate for a slow-cooked kleftiko, a chicken gyros, calamari and a horiatiki Greek salad, and Lemnos Taverna in Prahran rounds it out, a taverna reviewers say words do not do justice, a banquet for two of bread, dips, saganaki, salad and the meat and seafood platters.

How we ranked it

Every taverna here carries a Curateria Score built from its full review history, then weighted toward its most recent hundred reviews so the order reflects the room as it runs today, not as it ran two years ago. We hold the cohort to a tight inner-Melbourne radius, roughly 15km of the city, and drop multi-location chains and the national brands that trade on a logo more than a local following, so what is left reads as the genuine local order. We blend that quality score with how often and how recently diners are still talking about the place, and we read the snippets for the taverna table itself, the shared platters and the saganaki and the slow-cooked lamb, rather than the single souvlaki wrap or gyros plate the other pages already cover. The corpus is Victorian and scored; no AI writer ever reads it. The ranking is arithmetic; the words are ours.
