The best brunch in Melbourne right now

Brunch is the meal Melbourne polishes hardest: the benny plated with intent, the scramble with a kick, the coffee that decides whether you come back. This month the inner-city order runs through the cafes that get the weekend right. We ranked the contenders on their Curateria Score and on what diners keep saying across their most recent reviews, with chains and far suburbs left out. Here is where the weekend lands.

Top of the list is Brother Hen in the inner north, a 4.81 cafe with more than sixteen hundred reviews that reviewers say does everything to a high standard, the Spanish baked eggs, the ham-hock eggs benedict and the ricotta hotcakes all landing next to a coffee diners call quick and delicious. Bellboy Cafe | Brunswick Cafe in Brunswick East matches it closely, a modern, light-filled room where the bagels get called simply the best and a Bellboy Benedict and a chorizo patty melt keep regulars coming weekly.

The Hardware Societe in the city is the heavyweight on volume, more than four and a half thousand reviews behind a duck confit eggs benedict and a pork belly with crackle that reviewers still call as good as it gets. O'Hey Cafe in Coburg is the all-rounder, a 4.9 room on a Big O'Hey breakfast and a French toast with a smashed avocado and a service team reviewers go out of their way to praise. Lola Café in Seddon is the Spanish-leaning western favourite, corn fritters with poached eggs and halloumi and a Barcelona eggs benedict with jamon that one self-described Iberian-food fan rates highly, the coffee called great too.

St James Richmond in Richmond is the Turkish-eggs room, a 4.84 cafe on shakshuka and hot cakes with lemon ice cream where the coffee gets a clean rave. Dish & Spoon Cafe in Camberwell is the welcoming local, a Middle Eastern scramble with chermoula and a smoked-bacon bomba that reviewers want to keep as their own special oasis. Riche - Cafe Richmond in Richmond is the creative one, a Prawny Business of laksa-curry scrambled eggs with panko prawns and a black sesame latte that turned a couple's morning walk into their new local.

The list closes across the inner ring. Three Bags Full in Abbotsford is the hip old-factory room where simple Aussie brekky is done really well, the chilli scrambled eggs and the fried chicken burger leading the plate, Studley Park Boathouse in Kew is the riverside Sunday institution with more than three thousand reviews, the Yarra bend and the Sunday roast the draw and the service the reason people name it, Shanklin Cafe in Hawthorn East is the showstopper room on a baked-eggs shakshuka and a Biscoff French toast reviewers photograph before they eat, and Roslyn Thai Cafe in West Melbourne rounds it out, a Thai-leaning cafe and one diner's favourite breakfast place in Melbourne for the green curry with crispy chicken and the pandan coconut chiffon cake.

How we ranked it

Every cafe here carries a Curateria Score built from its full review history, then re-weighted toward the most recent hundred reviews so the order reflects the place as it is now, not as it was two years ago. We hold the cohort to a tight inner-Melbourne radius, roughly 15km of the city, and we drop chains and franchises, so what is left reads as the genuine local order. We blend that quality score with how often and how recently diners are still talking about a place. The corpus is Victorian and scored by us. No AI writer ever reads it. The ranking is arithmetic. The words are ours.
