The best contemporary Australian restaurants in Melbourne right now

If Modern Australian is the whole city eating, contemporary Australian is the dining-room end of it: the tasting menus, the native-produce kitchens cooking kangaroo and Murray cod with intent, the rooms built around the plate rather than the pub. This month the inner-city order leans hard into the fine end, because that is where the scores and the most recent reviews sit. We ranked the contenders by their Curateria Score and by what diners keep saying, with chains and far suburbs left out and the gastropubs and wine bars whose real identity sits elsewhere filtered away so the list stays true to the dining room. Here is the order.

Top of the list is Shelanous in Port Melbourne, scoring 4.92, a seasonal four-course degustation with paired cocktails where an avocado-lollipop amuse-bouche and a marshmallow finale bookend a kingfish course diners say they never want to spoil for the next table. Vue de monde in the city is the benchmark, a top-end degustation of wagyu, marron and macadamia with caviar over a four-hour sitting reviewers call hands down the best dining experience they have had.

Rare Steakhouse Uptown in the city brings the produce-led steakhouse register, an eye fillet, tomahawk and kangaroo skewer room reviewers praise for the food, the wine knowledge and a server named Catalina. Metro Burgers in the city is the native-protein curveball, a small counter where the kangaroo, crocodile and emu burgers deliver real flavour and the cannele is a sweet aside, contemporary Australian taken right down to the bun. Spirit Of Melbourne Cruising Restaurant is the river room, a cruising restaurant where an eye fillet and the fish of the day come with generous serves and a top-deck Melbourne skyline that pulls diners back a third time.

Cutler in Fitzroy is the chef's-room pick, a dry-aged duck and tuna-crudo kitchen where the "feed me" menu and the Cutler donuts with salmon roe earn a phenomenal verdict from a knowledgeable floor. Gimlet in the city is the grand one, lobster with saffron rice and a wood-fired whole chicken in a room reviewers say oozes class without the snootiness, and Navi in Yarraville is the destination, Australian produce by French technique with a Japanese haze, a duck sampler and an emu course one regular flatly calls the best restaurant in Melbourne.

The list closes across the inner city. Ludlow Bar & Dining Room in Southbank is the long-loved dining room, a Scotch fillet and crab linguini kitchen where a waiter named Ross draws review after review for the service alone. The Recreation Bistro x Bottleshop in Fitzroy North is the neighbourhood gem on a 4.86, dry-aged duck breast and beef Wellington in a cosy bistro tucked off the residential streets, Bellezza Restaurant Malvern in Malvern pairs Hokkaido scallops and an ocean claypot risotto with a BYO-wine bonus diners single out, and Eureka 89 - Dining & Events in Southbank rounds it out high above the city, an eight-course chef's selection of Hiramasa kingfish and Murray cod ballotine with a view reviewers call unforgettable.

How we ranked it

Every dining room on this list carries a Curateria Score drawn from its entire review history and then leaned toward the most recent hundred reviews, so the order reflects how the kitchen is cooking right now and not how it cooked two summers ago. We hold the cohort to a tight inner-Melbourne radius, roughly 15km of the city, and we strip out the chains and the franchises, so the order that survives is the genuine local one rather than a roll-call of the loudest brands. We then blend that quality score with how often and how recently diners are still writing about the place. The corpus is Victorian and scored by us. No AI writer ever reads it. The ranking is arithmetic. The words are ours.
