The best tapas in Melbourne right now

Tapas is a way of eating before it is a menu: a dozen small plates ordered across the table, croquetas and patatas bravas and gambas and a little tortilla, a glass of sherry or a vermouth, the order growing as the night does. It is the format and the bar culture, the standing-room buzz and the share-everything ritual, distinct from the broad Spanish cuisine survey the city has its own list for. Melbourne runs them through the CBD laneways out to Moonee Ponds, Hawthorn, Fitzroy, Reservoir and Ivanhoe East. We ranked the inner-city rooms diners name for that small-plates table by their Curateria Score and what reviewers keep saying on their most recent visits, with chains and far suburbs left out. Here is the order this month.

Top of the list is MoVida in the city, the cobblestone-lane institution reviewers call a wonderful Spanish room, the anchoa with tomato sorbet, the croquetas and the carrillera de buey beef cheeks the order across a long table, the wine and the service first-rate. Bombabar in the city follows, the funky room reviewers rate for plates made for sharing, the scallops with warm bread, the wagyu cecina and the bone marrow beside a burnt Basque cheesecake, the price reasonable.

GK Tapas Bar & Restaurant Moonee Ponds in Moonee Ponds is the high-scoring room reviewers praise for a huge range of tapas, the wagyu meatballs the highlight beside the kataifi prawn taco and the everything paella, the welcome warm and the room elegant but relaxed. MoVida Next Door in the city is the landmark casual room whose anchoa, croquetas and gambas reviewers say feel like a tapas bar in Spain, the bar seating a view of the kitchen. MoVida Aqui in the city is the MoVida room reviewers go to for the set menu, the braised beef cheek with Pedro Ximenez jus and the spanner crab on crumpet the standouts beside the calamari sliders.

Tinto in Hawthorn is the room reviewers return to for the scallop tapas, the pulpo octopus and the sobrasada beside an anchovy with smoked butter, the staff accommodating across a large menu, and El Rincon in the city is the room next to Queen Vic Market reviewers rate for the tapas and the ink squid paella, the waiter Sergio the best attention and service. BearBrass in Southbank is the riverside bar reviewers come to for a cold drink and the small bites, the seafood-and-chorizo paella and the lamb-and-flatbread starter the order, the server fantastic.

The list closes across the inner ring. Barr'd Tapas Bar in Ivanhoe East is the welcoming local reviewers call sensational, the patatas bravas, the chilli garlic prawns and the salt and pepper calamari beside a mixed chicken paella, good beers on tap and a warm room. Amarillo in Fitzroy is the room reviewers love for the vibe, the croquetas, the scallop with nduja butter and the boquerones the order, the staff warm and the night good for a large group, Anada Bar & Restaurant in Fitzroy is the room reviewers would give more than five stars, the filled peppers the standout beside a seafood paella, the patatas bravas, the morcilla and the octopus carpaccio across a four-course chef selection, and La Pinta in Reservoir rounds it out, a room reviewers call balanced, tasty and prepared with care, a beef heart skewer and a ricotta pasta beside the seafood, the open kitchen part of the experience.

How we ranked it

Every bar here carries a Curateria Score built from its full review history, then weighted toward its most recent hundred reviews so the order reflects the room as it runs today, not as it ran two years ago. We hold the cohort to a tight inner-Melbourne radius, roughly 15km of the city, and drop multi-location chains and the national brands that trade on a logo more than a local following, so what is left reads as the genuine local order. We blend that quality score with how often and how recently diners are still talking about the place, and we read the snippets for the small-plates ritual itself, the dozen shared dishes and the bar buzz, rather than the broad regional cuisine survey the Spanish page already covers. The corpus is Victorian and scored; no AI writer ever reads it. The ranking is arithmetic; the words are ours.
