The best Middle Eastern in Melbourne right now

Middle Eastern cooking runs deep across inner Melbourne, from the Lebanese charcoal grills of Brunswick to the Turkish gozleme houses and the modern mezze rooms reworking the classics. We ranked the field by Curateria Score and by what diners keep writing across their most recent reviews, with far suburbs, multi-location chains and the global franchises left out. Here is where the evidence settles this month.

Top of the list is Jode's Mediterranean Eatery in St Kilda, a near-perfect 4.99 across nearly fifteen hundred reviews, a healthy-bowl and falafel-platter room where diners single out the generous portions, the fresh food and an owner who boxes up the takeaway with extra salad. Leyalina in Carlton follows on a 4.86, a homely Egyptian kitchen people praise for its kofta, koshari and om ali, though recent reviews wish the owners a fabulous retirement, so check it is still trading before you make the trip.

Rumi in Brunswick East is the modern-Persian destination, a 1744-review room where the meatballs, the advieh-marinated lamb shoulder and the fried cauliflower draw a verdict diners call simply incredible, fresh and fast. Aysel Turkish Restaurant in Fitzroy is the Turkish-grill pick, a 4.88 kitchen one regular calls an absolute masterpiece of an Adana kebab after fifty other Turkish rooms, with manti and stuffed grape leaves alongside. Sezar Restaurant in the city is the refined option, a burnt-butter hummus and slow-cooked lamb-shoulder room reviewers rate for the chilled vibe and the careful execution.

Turkish Gozleme Pide & Sweet House in Kensington scores a 4.89 on gozleme that diners say takes them back to Turkey, a spinach-and-cheese and egg-and-cheese counter regulars visit once or twice a week. Mint & Co. in Carlton carries the deepest review count on the list, well past eight thousand, a shawarma-and-shisha room people stay loyal to for the vibe and the kanafeh. Mama Manoush in Brunswick East is the Lebanese banquet pick, a meat-lovers platter of chargrilled kafta and skewers with tabbouleh and knafeh one diner says comes close to their Lebanese mum's cooking.

The list closes across the inner north and beyond. Tiba's Restaurant in Brunswick is the long-runner, a 3542-review charcoal-shawarma and falafel room a returning diner calls just as good as they remember from a decade back. Golden Fleece Hotel in South Melbourne is the Mediterranean all-rounder, a grilled-octopus and lamb-souvlaki room reviewers rate for the atmosphere and the fair price. Bar Oussou in Brunswick brings the date-pudding and skewer crowd in a room people call their favourite pub in the suburb, and Ashy's Afghan Restaurant in Ashburton rounds it out, an Afghan kitchen on mantu dumplings, Kabuli pallow and a mixed kebab platter that diners say feels like a real home-cooked meal.

How we ranked it

Each kitchen on this page begins with a Curateria Score, a single number we build from the venue's entire review history and then lean toward its most recent hundred reviews, so the order follows how the kitchen is cooking this month rather than how it cooked a few years ago. We keep the field inside a tight inner-Melbourne radius of about 15km, and we leave out the multi-location chains and the global franchises that trade on a brand more than a local following, so the names that remain are the ones the city keeps coming back to. That quality score is then set against how often and how recently diners are still writing about a place. The corpus is Victorian and scored by us, and no AI writer ever reads it. The maths fixes the order. The words are ours.
