The best mezze in Melbourne right now

Mezze is the table that fills up before anyone has ordered a main: hummus and dips with warm flatbread, charred eggplant, manti and kibbeh, a spread built to share and graze. It runs Levantine and Greek and across the wider Middle East, and Melbourne lays it out from city dining rooms to Brunswick wine bars and Northcote bakeries. We ranked the inner-city rooms that diners name for that spread by their Curateria Score and what reviewers keep saying on their most recent visits, with chains and far suburbs left out. Here is the order this month.

Top of the list is Sezar Restaurant in the city, the chilled-out room reviewers call superbly executed and worth every cent, a burnt-butter hummus and a spanner-crab manti among the different ideas with food. Mint & Co. in Carlton carries the most reviews on the list by a wide margin, a shawarma platter and an ustadi kebab with toum dip reviewers love alongside the atmosphere and the late-night shisha.

Maha Restaurant in the city is the elegant room reviewers book for an amazing experience, a soufra set menu of lamb shoulder and hummus with warm house flatbread, the high-class service and the wine list part of it. Yakamoz in Brunswick East is the not-too-loud room reviewers call on point top to bottom, a proper wood-fired pide and mixed mezze and dips they recommend without reservation. Maha East in Windsor is the group's second room, a wagyu tartare and grilled calamari and haloumi cigars with attentive staff reviewers tell you to book ahead for.

WAYGOOD in Richmond is the wine bar reviewers rate for high-quality, well-priced food, a braised chickpea ragu and carrots with whipped feta they say not to skip, and Cairo Nights Restaurant & Bar in Carlton is the Egyptian room reviewers credit with a molokhia and a lamb tagen and a mixed grill that takes them back home. Blackout Restaurant and Lounge in Fitzroy is the restaurant and lounge reviewers return to for a lamb platter and a kanafeh, the warm welcome at the door a fixture of the night.

The list closes across the inner suburbs. The Snob in Brighton is the list's highest score at nearly five, the hangout reviewers prize for the environment, the food and the mezze platters as much as the shisha. Shamiat Authentic Syrian Restaurant in Northcote is the Syrian room reviewers call unmatched, a shish kebab and a kibbeh and a special mezze platter freshly made on site, Zareh in Collingwood is the counter-seat room reviewers describe as one of the best experiences in Melbourne, a spanner-crab hummus with Aish Baladi and a charcoal chicken kebab, and Keif Restaurant and Cafe rounds it out, the room reviewers chill in over a hummus and a knafeh, the warm owners and the full-flavour food the reason they call it a find.

How we ranked it

Every room here carries a Curateria Score built from its full review history, then weighted toward its most recent hundred reviews so the order reflects the kitchen as it cooks today, not as it cooked two years ago. We hold the cohort to a tight inner-Melbourne radius, roughly 15km of the city, and drop multi-location chains, so what is left reads as the genuine local order. We blend that quality score with how often and how recently diners are still talking about the place, and we read the snippets for the shared mezze spread itself rather than narrowing the page to the Greek or wider Middle Eastern lists the city already carries. The corpus is Victorian and scored; no AI writer ever reads it. The ranking is arithmetic; the words are ours.
