The best Malaysian in Melbourne right now

Malaysian cooking is a city the size of a hawker centre: a laksa pot, a char kway teow with wok hei, a nasi lemak with rendang, a roti canai torn at the table. Melbourne does it from Glen Waverley food halls to Carlton nasi kandar counters and Fitzroy supper rooms. We ranked the inner-city kitchens that diners name for those dishes by their Curateria Score and what reviewers keep saying on their most recent visits, with chains and far suburbs left out. Here is the order this month.

Top of the list is Laksa King in Glen Waverley, the food hall built on its laksa, where reviewers order the combination and king-prawn laksa and the char kway teow and call the serves cracking, fresh and well-sized. Teh Tarik Corner in Prahran follows on a Guinness stout chicken rib, a char kway teow and a Hainanese chicken rice that reviewers who grew up with the cuisine call comfort and nostalgia food done right.

Mamak Melbourne in the city is the roti room with a queue, a roti tisu cone and a roti canai alongside chicken satay and a nasi lemak reviewers say taste so good they come back for the sate. ROTI BAR in the city is the banana-leaf specialist on a nasi kandar and a roti canai, a party-atmosphere room reviewers tell you to book ahead for. The Rice Cooker in North Melbourne is the staple near Parkville on a char kway teow and a nasi lemak with beef rendang, a busy, flavour-filled room reviewers keep coming back to.

Masak Masak in Yarraville is the list's highest score at nearly five, a small western-suburbs kitchen on rendang, satay, laksa and roti where the service outshines even the food, and Veggie Chef in Oakleigh is the vegetarian Malaysian cafe reviewers call the best in the south-east on a vegan laksa and a sambal chicken. Norsiah's Kitchen in Carlton is the cheap-and-cheerful nasi kandar counter reviewers rate among the best halal spots in Melbourne, the friendly uncle and the generous portions part of the draw.

The list closes across the inner suburbs. Ren Dao in Elsternwick is the vegetarian institution reviewers have returned to for ten years, a mock roast duck and a Bak Kut Teh holding a high standard. KANTAN in Fitzroy is the supper room reviewers call their favourite for the best laksa in town, a chicken kapitan curry and a Kantan fried chicken alongside it, Blue Chillies in Fitzroy is the knick-knack-filled room diners love for a seafood laksa and a beef rendang in a moody, welcoming space, and 4 Seasons Laksa in Moorabbin rounds it out, a laksa specialist reviewers flatly call off its head, the combination laksa and a good-value lunch special the picks.

How we ranked it

Every kitchen here carries a Curateria Score built from its full review history, then weighted toward its most recent hundred reviews so the order reflects the kitchen as it cooks today, not as it cooked two years ago. We hold the cohort to a tight inner-Melbourne radius, roughly 15km of the city, and drop multi-location chains, so what is left reads as the genuine local order. We blend that quality score with how often and how recently diners are still talking about the place, and we read the snippets for the Malaysian dishes themselves rather than crediting a midday-deal reputation another list already covers. The corpus is Victorian and scored; no AI writer ever reads it. The ranking is arithmetic; the words are ours.
