The best dumplings in Melbourne right now

Melbourne takes its dumplings seriously, from hand-folded xiao long bao in the city to pan-fried parcels in the inner suburbs. We ranked the inner-city dumpling specialists by Curateria Score and what diners keep saying in their most recent reviews, chains and far suburbs left out. Here is the order this month.

Top of the list is Dumplings Plus in Maribyrnong, a long-loved kitchen with nearly two thousand reviews where the dumplings and the honey chicken both draw praise and regulars say they are never disappointed. Taste of China in the city scores higher at 4.79 on pork dumplings with peanut and chilli sauce and a century-egg congee, a tidy room reviewers rate for the food and the atmosphere.

Oriental Teahouse South Yarra in South Yarra is the all-rounder, a big menu of dumpling varieties down to chocolate ones, with reviewers praising the range and the service. Shanghai Street on Elizabeth on Elizabeth Street leads with hand-folded xiao long bao reviewers call amazing, the soup dumplings the reason for the short queue out front. Bowl Bowl Sichuan in Collingwood brings the heat, its Sichuan mala dumplings in house chilli oil drawing diners who call them addictive and perfectly balanced.

ShanDong MaMa Mini in the city is the cult pick, a little laneway diner whose signature mackerel dumplings and Melbourne pan-fried dumplings reviewers describe as bursting with flavour and freshness. Fortune Dumpling in the city backs its xiao long bao and pan-fried dumplings with an outstanding-dumplings verdict, and China Red in the city keeps a quick-bite crowd happy on pan-fried dumplings and house-made siu mai before the theatre.

The list closes across the inner suburbs. Will's Dumpling in Moonee Ponds draws a pure-delight verdict on pan-fried pork dumplings and soup dumplings, CHI BAO in Yarraville earns repeat visits for fried dumplings and a shen jian bao, Three Pandas Dumpling House in Parkville scores a 4.73 on steamed and pan-fried dumplings reviewers call consistently great with friendly service, and Dumpling Chef DFO South Wharf at South Wharf rounds it out with pork dumplings in chilli oil that regulars treat as comfort food.

How we ranked it

Every kitchen here carries a Curateria Score built from its full review history, then re-weighted toward the most recent hundred reviews so the order reflects the kitchen as it cooks today, not as it cooked two years ago. We hold the cohort to a tight inner-Melbourne radius, roughly 15km of the city, and drop multi-location chains, so what is left reads as the genuine local order. We blend that quality score with how often and how recently diners are still talking about the place. The corpus is Victorian and scored; no AI writer ever reads it. The ranking is arithmetic; the words are ours.
