The best bakeries in Melbourne right now

A great Melbourne bakery earns its queue at the counter: the croissant that is worth the alley walk, the bagel that holds its filling, the cake cabinet you cannot leave empty-handed. We ranked the inner-city bakeries on their Curateria Score and on what diners keep saying across their most recent reviews, with chains and franchises left out. Here is where the counter lands this month.

Top of the list is O'Heas Bakery, Deli & Foodstore in Coburg, an institution by every reviewer's reckoning, a deli-bakery where the steak sandwich and the chicken schnitzel roll in ciabatta share the cabinet with a pistachio croissant, cannoli and tiramisu, the staff praised for the care they put into all of it. Schmucks Bagels in the city is the bagel room, a 1004-review counter on a Miss U Lox of smoked salmon and cream cheese on rye and a pastrami breakfast bagel reviewers call excellent.

Candied Bakery in Spotswood is the destination bakery, a 1254-review room reviewers rank among the best in Melbourne for everything from the tres leches cake to the cinnamon scroll and the beef sausage roll, with a building and a long table people love sitting at. Bakemono Bakers in the city is the alleyway find, a Japanese-leaning bakery whose yuzu almond croissant, shio pan and earl grey canele draw a queue down the lane on the strength of the aroma alone. 4me gluten free in Elsternwick is the dedicated gluten-free bakery, a 4.86 room where the cinnamon scrolls, the focaccia and the bagels are all coeliac-safe and good enough that one regular cannot believe the scroll is gluten-free.

Calle Bakery in Carlton North is the croissant specialist, a sourdough loaf and a roster of pistachio, banoffee and Dubai-chocolate croissants backed by service reviewers single out. Green Refectory in Brunswick is the long-running cake-and-pie cafe, a 1976-review room where the sausage rolls, the haloumi-spinach-and-mushroom pie and the vanilla slice keep a devoted crowd. Mister Nice Guy's Bakeshop in Ascot Vale is the vegan royalty pick, a bakeshop whose cinnamon scroll and glazed bronut reviewers say have altered their brain chemistry, celebration cakes and all.

The list closes across the inner ring and the west. Bread Club in North Melbourne is the bread-lover's room on a garlic-and-rosemary fougasse and an almond croissant with a pastrami sandwich some call world class, The Original Pastizzi Company in Sunshine North is the Maltese pastizzi specialist people drive in for and the ricotta-and-pea and apple-custard pastizzi back it up, Bakes & Bagels (Thomastown) in Thomastown is the 4.87 bagel-and-coffee counter reviewers call unmatched for consistency, and Mitko Deli & Café rounds it out, a deli-cafe where the Reuben, the custard donuts and the take-home pierogi earn a wish-I-could-give-six-stars verdict.

How we ranked it

Every bakery here carries a Curateria Score built from its full review history, then re-weighted toward the most recent hundred reviews so the order reflects the place as it is now, not as it was two years ago. We hold the cohort to a tight inner-Melbourne radius, roughly 15km of the city, and we drop chains and franchises, so what is left reads as the genuine local order. We blend that quality score with how often and how recently diners are still talking about a place. The corpus is Victorian and scored by us. No AI writer ever reads it. The ranking is arithmetic. The words are ours.
